The name "Burke's Garden" was given to the valley as a joke in 1748 after Burke planted potato peelings by the campfire of a surveying party. The next year, a fine crop of potatoes was found.
Known as “Vanderbilt’s First Choice,” and “God’s Thumbprint,” beautiful Burke’s Garden is Virginia’s highest valley and largest rural historic district. This bowl-shaped valley carved out of the top of a mountain offers the most breathtaking scenery with verdant farmland, abundant wildlife, rare bird watching, peaceful biking, and adventurous hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
Enjoy a traditional Amish meal at Matties Place or the Burke's Garden General Store and enjoy traditional and contemporary Appalachian art at the Burke's Garden Artisan Guild.
It was designated a National and Virginia Rural Historical District. The community can be viewed from the Appalachian Trail or by car from state route 623.
Burke's Garden is home to an official Virginia Tourism LOVEwork.
