River Farm is the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, located off the George Washington Parkway between Old Town Alexandria and Mount Vernon, overlooking the Potomac. It was one of George Washington's five farms in Northern Virginia.
Today River Farm is comprised of 25 acres of gardens and grounds, featuring perennial borders, a children's garden, a four-acre sustainable meadow, a woodland, 19th-century gates that once stood at the White House, and picnic areas. Large porches offer panoramic views of the Potomac and our gardens. River Farm is open to the public and is also available as a rental property for weddings, meetings, and other events.
The gardens are a favorite site for family picnics, bird-watchers, and painters.
The American Horticultural Society is the premier gardening non-profit in the United States and offers programs and information to gardeners all over the country. Join the AHS today and receive free admission to 300 public gardens and arboreta, a subscription to our members-only magazine, The American Gardener, and much more.
