Wade's Mill, Virginia's oldest operating commercial grist mill, is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Meet the Miller and explore three floors of historic milling equipment and museum displays. Gardens and picnic areas. Free admission and parking.
The Mill's legacy began with Joseph Kennedy, a Scots-Irish immigrant who arrived in America in 1733. He built "Captain Kennedy's Mill" by 1750. The Wade family purchased the Mill in 1882, when it became the "Kennedy-Wade Mill" and eventually "Wade's Mill".
The historic milling equipment dates from the 1880s and includes an automated milling system invented by Oliver Evans, for which he received U.S. Patent #3 in 1790. The Mill is powered by a 21-foot overshot iron water wheel.
Today we stone-grind a variety of premium and heirloom grains into 100% natural, preservative-free flours, grits, cornmeals and specialty mixes, which are available in the Mill Shop and our online shop.
You’ll find Wade’s Mill products on the menus of restaurants, bakeries and B&Bs and on the shelves of gourmet grocers, specialty markets and selected gift shops throughout Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area.
2021 Opening Hours: April 3-December 19, Thursday-Sunday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. The waterwheel and historic equipment run Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-noon.
