In 1642 Adam Thoroughgood II commissioned the Ferry service up and down the Lynnhaven River, to bring farmers to the only windmills in the area, hence our name of Ferry Plantation. As far as we have traced back there may have been as many as eleven stops along the river.
In 1735 the third Princess Anne Courthouse was built on Ferry Plantation property to replace the timber courthouse. The third courthouse was in existence from 1735 until the construction of the Walke “Manor” Mansion in 1751 for William Walke.
A new courthouse was built at Newtown Road and the stocks and pillory were taken from Ferry Plantation to the new court house. The Walke’s used the former Courthouse now as a kitchen. The Manor house was destroyed by a fire in 1828.
George and Elizabeth Mason (Walke) Macintosh built the center section of the home from the brick remains of the Manor House in 1830. The house was built for 17 year old Charles Fleming Macintosh. Charles and his wife Isabella lived on the property and had 6 children. Charles was commissioned by the Confederate Navy to be Captain of the CSS Louisiana. In 1850 the last section of the house was built.
