The Beethoven Experience with the Borromeo Quartet is a landmark musical and educational experience marking the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, featuring an exploration of all sixteen of his string quartets. The series will be a three-way collaboration among Mary Baldwin University’s College of Visual & Performing Arts, the American Shakespeare Center, and the Heifetz International Music Institute.

Each of the six concerts, presented in the intimate surroundings of the ASC’s iconic Blackfriars Playhouse, will feature a quartet from the “Early, Middle, and Late” periods. The “Beethoven Experience” is designed to be both a concert and educational experience, particularly for the Mary Baldwin student body, who will have the opportunity for dialogue with the members of the Borromeo Quartet, as well as to witness up-close open rehearsals and enjoy free access to the evening concerts.

In addition, students and ticketholders alike will have the opportunity to participate in a pre-concert public symposium investigating the intersection between Beethoven and the intellectual, political, and artistic currents of his time – and ours, featuring Heifetz Institute Artistic Director Nicholas Kitchen, ASC Artistic Director Ethan McSweeney, MBU College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Paul Menzer, as well as special guest commentators from the MBU, ASC, and Heifetz community of faculty and experts. The symposia will be moderated by Heifetz Institute President & CEO Benjamin K. Roe.
