It is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison and William Henry Harrison, the place where well known “Taps” was composed, Civil War Headquarters, and the site of the first official Thanksgiving. With its famous gardens overlooking the James River, Berkeley is quite a destination. Looking for something a little spookier? Shirley Plantation dates back to 1613 and is the oldest family-owned business in North America as Virginia’s first plantation. While you’re visiting the beautiful grounds, take a peek inside and ask how Aunt Pratt is doing. If you’re lucky you may see her portrait swing on the wall, all by itself.
