Route 56, which winds and climbs up to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Montebello was once an old Indian trail that connected present day Nelson County with Steele’s Tavern in Augusta County two hundred years ago. Crabtree Falls, the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River is a popular hiking trail and located near Montebello.
Atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, and near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail, Montebello offers many types of outdoor recreation, camping, a trout fishing pond and many hiking trails in the area. The Montebello State Fish Hatchery is easily accessible from Route 56 and is open to the public. Enjoy a cozy cabin in the mountains for a week or weekend of relaxation.
