The 1905 Academy of Music Theatre is one of Lynchburg's most notable historical treasures. The theater closed in 1958 and was silent for over 60 years. The theater has now undergone extensive restoration to return the building.to its original state and reopened its doors in December 2018.
Richmond, our State Capitol
Richmond Raceway has undergone an infield redevelopment project, named Richmond Raceway Reimagined. The project brings new attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, teams, sponsors, and other stakeholders to the historic Richmond infield. The modernized infield launched over NASCAR playoff weekend September 21-22, 2018.
The Germanna Foundation is building an addition of the Hitt Archaeology Lab that will be built adjacent to the Fort Germanna Visitor Center later this year. It will be used to preserve and showcase the different artifacts that have been discovered at the Fort Germanna/Enchanted Castle archaeology site, as well as a location for their archaeologist, interns and volunteers to clean and process the artifacts
The reconstruction of the birthplace of President James Monroe just outside of Colonial Beach will include a rebuilt colonial home, a scenic walk (complete with granite historical markers along the trail telling the story of Monroe’s career), a bicycle trail, a canoe launch, benches, an overlook, and a picnic pavilion.
Construction is underway for the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Element Hotel at Peninsula Town Center. The hotel will be 95,000 square feet with more than 120 rooms and is expected to open fall 2019.
The Cavalier Hotel’s long-awaited extensive $75 million renovation is complete. The historic hotel reopened March 2, 2018 as a 5-star member of Marriott’s distinguished Autograph Collection with 85 guest rooms, an onsite bourbon distillery, a ballroom for events, and a world class restaurant.
Opened in October 2018, Zeiders American Dream Theatre provides a unique professional venue in which upcoming artists and performers can showcase and develop their crafts in real time. Their 300-seat theater offers an intimate, interactive complement to larger venues in the area. Visitors get the opportunity to enjoy entertainment that they won’t get anywhere else.
Glass Light Hotel, a Marriott Autograph Collection, will open in Norfolk's historic Rail District in May 2020. The hotel will be down the street from the nationally ranked Chrysler Museum of Art and its Glass Studio. It is expected to open during Norfolk's first Mural Rail Festival, which is likely to become an annual festival.
2019 Commemoration: American Evolution
Special exhibits, signature events and special performances will be occurring in the Coastal Virginia region throughout the year. The Virginia Arts Festival and the 2019 Commemoration have commissioned performances by national acts.
Coming in spring 2019 to Water Country USA, Cutback Water Coaster will be the only RocketBLAST® coaster on the East Coast and Virginia’s first hybrid water coaster. The ride is 856 feet long, with a 76 ft. total drop and reaches speeds of 35 ft. per second.
Also new for 2019, Busch Gardens will be debuting Finnegan's Flyer. This "Screamin' Swing" will reach a staggering height of more than 80 feet with a speed of 45 mph.
The CEB Tower opened to the public June 2018. The 31-story building offers an outdoor terrace that gives visitors a truly spectacular view of the DC skyline. The 15,000-square-foot space will also be used as an exhibit space and feature a restaurant and bar.
Fall 2019 brings the grand reopening of The Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. Currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, once complete the Arlington House will be restored to its original 1860 appearance.
Coming in 2020, the National Museum of the United States Army will celebrate over 240 years of Army history and honor our nation’s soldiers – past, present, and future - with interactive exhibits, meeting and event space, performance venues and more.
Construction is underway at George Washington’s Ferry Farm on the replica of the Washington Family homestead. This is a huge story and resource about George Washington’s childhood and how it impacted his adult life.
The most visited historic site in the U.S., George Washington’s Mount Vernon reopened its Revolutionary War Theater in early 2018. The theater features state-of-the-art 4-D effects, including: snowfall, fog and rumbling seats to tell the story of General George Washington’s major victories during the American Revolution.
The New Visitor Center at Valley Mall is a perfect stop off Interstate 81 (Exit 247A). The center offers a free meal voucher and welcome bags for motorcoaches when they call ahead as well as an indoor indoor 1/2 mile lap track and ample parking. The Valley Mall offers a plethora of shops and national brands, two full service restaurants, massage chairs, a bookstore, coffee shop, and a new local homemade waffle shop!
Two new hotels have come on board! The Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites and a Tru by Hilton are now taking reservations.
The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum has a new exhibit featuring Staunton's own Statler Brothers opening spring 2019.
Southwest Virginia - Blue Ridge Highlands
Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace, formerly known as Heartwood, has reopened with a refreshed look and renewed focus on telling the culturally authentic story of Southwest Virginia to residents and visitors alike. An expanded visitor center, new theater and exhibits, and a reinvented restaurant are just a few of the new features.
Opened fall 2018, The Bristol Hotel re-purposes downtown Bristol’s notable Executive Plaza, which dates back to 1925 into a 65-room boutique hotel. It will feature a rooftop bar with scenic views and street-front dining serving farm-to-table style cuisine.
Southwest Virginia - Heart of Appalachia
Now open, the Western Front Hotel is a historic boutique hotel with 30 hotel rooms in downtown St. Paul situated between the Spearhead Trails and the Clinch River. The hotel features Milton's, an upscale Appalachian Cuisine restaurant. It also includes a rooftop bar, gift shop, Music Hall, outdoor lawn and stage for performances, and a billiards/pool room.
